Deer get a lot of their water from plants. Years ago, I read how much, but don't remember now. But it was a major percentage-- Significantly more than 50%, as I recall. Around here they have some green to eat in winter. Some kinds of honeysuckle, though it's hard to tell if they don't eat the evergreen kind all the way down or we have mostly the non-evergreen. I'm pretty sure I've run into both kinds late winter. Jessamine. Greenbrier (smilax). Holly. Cedar. Rhododendron. Woody browse.

It makes you think about animals that have to scratch around on the ground for food, using all their fat reserves up while heavy snow's on the ground. For instance, I can't imagine what turkeys are eating around here right now. The ground won't be accessible for another few days, unfrozen water's scarce, etc.

    LOL ... Lindsey's OK. I don't always agree with him, but that's OK. He's entertaining, too. :-)

If you use Jif or Skippy you can get away with deer or possum fat ... But if you go generic on the PB, you have to use prime fat to make up for it, or the birds won't eat it.

That's pretty good. I haven't watched SNL in ages. I don't watch Morning Joe except once in a blue moon, but it seemed like they nailed it. Joe and Mika ARE a little cringe-inducing.

LOL ... They say the fat is one of the main things that will turn venison rank for humans. I never would have thought about using it for bird feed. But I guess suet is suet. :tu:

This is why you always want to have something stored on the DVR ... I lost satellite hours ago. I'm watching the Seahawks leading the Cardinals by 1 with four minutes to go ... Cards have the ball. It's a game from this year, so I've got that going for me, which is nice ...

The wildest one got past me without me knowing it, so whether she likes it or not she'll be warm and dry now. She's only explored the house one time before, and it took her a whole day to work up the nerve to find her way out again. She's the one nominated to be "Most Likely To Be Trapped In The Crawlspace" but right now she's better off than her three buddies who refuse to come in at all, whether she intended it or not.

I've got that going on right now. I have three that will come inside, so they're okay. The others will come slightly inside the kitchen door but I can't close it, so I'm heating the great outdoors right now so they get some calories in them. The snow is above their bellies and they are not happy about it ... Walking in each others' paw-steps helps a bit, but one of them always has to be the pioneer. :ek:

Well, I tried to post a couple of pics out my kitchen door but they're too big for upload from my computer and I don't have time to fool with a different method. I have seven inches on my deck. The place looks like Narnia. Heavy wet snow on all the limbs and branches. Everything is covered. I keep thinking of the Jack London story where the guy dies because overhanging snow drops and puts his campfire out. I'm surprised I still have power, but we haven't had any wind yet. Bottom line: I'll be here for a while. My road doesn't get plowed and it also doesn't get sun. Until I can figure something else out, here's a little piece of art I call "Snow At Swampy's."

Gotcha. For some reason I can never remember the name of the one you have, so I couldn't look it up. I like that this is nice and compact, and at $15 the price is right.

The deer contest closed yesterday, so I think we can announce a winner today, assuming Bluecat has all the entries together. And this is a heads-up and advance notice: We need somebody new to take over the turkey contest this year if you all want to do one. It's not like it's a lot of work, but I think I've run my course. Time for some fresh blood.

Leupold was the first and only bow-attached rangefinder that I can think of. I have no idea how well they sell. If Garmin can put a laser-digital-virtual pins sight together, why can't we get the same without the rangefinder from somebody? That would be much less expensive, I'd think, and I believe tons of people would hand over their money for well-lit virtual pins.
